Reformer Pilates Singapore: Private & Duet Sessions at Pilatique
Updated: November 2026 · Pilatique Singapore
Looking for Reformer Pilates in Singapore? The Reformer is one of the best-known pieces of Pilates equipment — but choosing the machine is only the beginning.
What matters just as much is how the Reformer is used, what exercises are selected, how resistance is adjusted, how clearly you are instructed and whether the session suits your current ability and goals.
Pilatique focuses primarily on Private (1:1) and Duet (2:1) Pilates rather than regular open group Reformer classes.
Sessions may use the Reformer as well as other Pilates apparatus and Matwork depending on what is appropriate for you.
What is Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates uses a specialised Pilates apparatus with a moving carriage, springs, straps and a footbar to provide adjustable resistance and assistance.
This allows exercises to be performed in many positions and at different levels of challenge.
But the Reformer is the apparatus — not the entire Pilates method. A well-rounded Pilates programme may also use Matwork, Cadillac, Stability Chair, Barrels and other equipment.
New to Reformer Pilates? Pilatique offers Private and Duet sessions at our CBD, Farrer Park and Bukit Timah studios. Begin with a guided Starter Session or tell us your goals and preferred location.
Why is Reformer Pilates so popular in Singapore?
Reformer Pilates has become one of the most visible ways people discover Pilates in Singapore.
The attraction is understandable.
The apparatus feels structured and specialised. Springs create resistance. The carriage creates movement. Exercises can be scaled in many ways. And having an instructor guide the session can feel less intimidating than trying to navigate a gym independently.
But popularity can also create confusion.
A Reformer session can range from highly individual instruction to a large shared class moving through a fixed sequence.
Those are not the same experience.
What does the Pilates Reformer actually do?
The Reformer gives instructors a versatile way to change resistance, support, body position and movement challenge.
Adjustable resistance
Springs provide different levels of resistance that can be selected according to the exercise and the person doing it.
Assistance as well as challenge
Spring resistance does not only make movement harder. In some exercises, the apparatus can also help guide or support movement.
Many body positions
Exercises can be performed lying, sitting, kneeling or standing, allowing different movement and coordination challenges.
Movement feedback
The carriage and springs provide physical feedback that can help clients become more aware of how they are moving.
Progression
Resistance, range, stability demands and exercise complexity can change over time as the programme progresses.
Variety without randomness
The apparatus offers a large exercise repertoire, but exercise selection should still serve a purpose rather than simply creating novelty.
The Reformer is excellent equipment. It is not the whole Pilates method.
This distinction matters because Reformer Pilates has become so popular that many people now use “Reformer” and “Pilates” almost interchangeably.
At Pilatique, we do not believe every person or every goal should be forced onto one apparatus.
Your session may use different equipment depending on the exercise and what your instructor is trying to achieve.
The equipment should serve the programme — not become the programme by itself.
Is Reformer Pilates suitable for beginners?
Yes, Reformer Pilates can be suitable for beginners.
You do not need to be flexible, already strong or experienced in Pilates before you begin.
What matters is whether the starting level and session format are appropriate for you.
A healthy, confident beginner
May be comfortable learning in a suitable shared environment with clear beginner instruction.
A beginner who wants more individual attention
May prefer Private or Duet Pilates so apparatus setup, exercise selection and progression can be adjusted more closely.
A beginner with pain or significant stiffness
May benefit from a more individual starting point or appropriate healthcare assessment depending on the symptoms.
A beginner returning after years away from exercise
Can start progressively rather than trying to keep pace with someone who already has months or years of Pilates experience.
Private, Duet or Group Reformer Pilates: which is better?
None is automatically “best”.
They simply provide different levels of individual attention, shared pacing and cost.
Private Pilates
One instructor working with one client. The session can be adapted closely to your goals, exercise experience, movement confidence and progress.
Duet Pilates
One instructor working with two appropriately matched clients. It offers a shared session while retaining substantially more individual observation than a large class.
Group Reformer
Several clients exercise together under shared instruction. This can work well for suitable clients who enjoy the class format and are comfortable following a common programme.
The useful question is how much individual observation, adjustment and shared pacing you want at this stage.
Is Reformer Pilates strength training?
Reformer Pilates uses resistance, so it can challenge muscular strength and muscular endurance.
But that does not make every Reformer session equivalent to a progressive resistance-training programme designed specifically to maximise muscle mass or maximal strength.
If your main goal is to become substantially stronger or build muscle, appropriate resistance training remains important.
Pilates and weight training can also be used together.
If you already lift weights, Pilates does not necessarily need to replace your gym programme.
Is Reformer Pilates good for back pain?
It can be useful for some people, but the Reformer itself is not a treatment for back pain.
Its spring resistance, moving carriage and different setup options give instructors multiple ways to adjust an exercise.
What matters is whether the exercise, resistance, range and progression are appropriate for the individual.
Someone with back pain should therefore not choose a session simply because the words “Reformer Pilates” appear in the class name.
If back pain, recurring flare-ups or rehabilitation concerns are already part of your situation, start with our dedicated guide.
Is Reformer Pilates useful for men?
Yes.
Men do not need a separate version of Pilates.
The Reformer can provide resistance, assistance and movement challenges that are useful whether someone already lifts weights, runs, cycles, golfs or plays sport.
For men who associate Pilates mainly with stretching or floor exercises, the apparatus often makes it easier to understand that Pilates can involve significant resistance and coordination.
But again, Pilates should not be sold as a replacement for everything else.
What about Reformer Pilates for men and women over 40?
There is nothing magical about turning 40.
But your 40s, 50s and 60s are often when exercise goals become broader.
You may still want strength and fitness, while also caring more about mobility, balance, movement confidence and maintaining physical capacity for the decades ahead.
For men over 40
Reformer Pilates can sit alongside gym training, running, golf, cycling and other sport rather than requiring you to replace them.
For women over 40
Reformer Pilates can provide a structured resistance and movement environment while remaining part of a broader programme that should still consider cardiovascular fitness, strength, balance and overall activity.
Singapore's physical activity guidance encourages adults to maintain aerobic activity and muscle strengthening, with additional emphasis on strength and functional balance for adults over 50.
Why does the quality of Reformer Pilates instruction matter?
A Reformer does not decide:
- which exercise you should do
- how much spring resistance to use
- how far you should move
- when you should progress
- when an exercise should be changed
- whether another apparatus would be more useful
Those decisions come from the instructor and the programme.
Pilatique is a STOTT PILATES® Academy Partner with instructor education experience dating to 2008. Our education programmes have served over 2,000 unique Pilates education students across the region; this is a student participation count, not a count of certified instructors. This teaching background informs how we approach exercise selection, cueing and progression in Singapore.
That is why two studios can own similar-looking Reformers and still provide very different Pilates experiences.

You prefer instruction built around you rather than following a standard shared class sequence.
People with pain or stiffness
You want a more individual starting point because your movement needs may not fit a general class format.
Men who already train

Adults over 40
You are thinking beyond today's workout and want to maintain movement capacity for work, sport, travel and daily life.

You want access to a wider Pilates repertoire rather than assuming every exercise problem should be solved on one machine.

Private & Duet PilatesFrequently asked questions about Reformer Pilates in Singapore
What is Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates uses a specialised Pilates apparatus with a moving carriage, springs, straps and a footbar. The springs provide adjustable resistance and can also assist certain movements. The Reformer is one part of the wider Pilates equipment repertoire.
Is Reformer Pilates suitable for beginners?
Yes. Beginners can start Reformer Pilates without already being flexible or experienced. The appropriate starting format depends on your health, exercise background, confidence and how much individual guidance you want.
Does Pilatique offer group Reformer classes?
Pilatique focuses primarily on Private (1:1) and Duet (2:1) Pilates. We do not operate regular open group Reformer classes.
Is Private Reformer Pilates better than group Reformer?
Not automatically. Private Pilates provides more individual observation, exercise selection and adjustment. Group Reformer offers shared instruction and can suit people who enjoy a class format and are comfortable following common programming. The best format depends on the individual.
Is Reformer Pilates strength training?
Reformer Pilates uses spring resistance and can challenge muscular strength and endurance. However, it is not automatically equivalent to a progressive weight-training programme designed specifically to maximise muscle mass or maximal strength.
Can men do Reformer Pilates?
Yes. Pilates is not gender-specific. Men who lift weights, run, cycle, golf or play sport may use Pilates alongside their existing training rather than replacing it.
Is Reformer Pilates good for people over 40?
It can be one useful form of exercise for adults in their 40s, 50s and beyond. The programme should still be considered alongside broader needs such as cardiovascular activity, strength, balance and overall physical activity.
Is Reformer Pilates good for back pain?
Reformer exercises can be useful for some people with back pain, but the machine itself does not treat back pain. Exercise selection, range, resistance, progression and the nature of your symptoms matter. Concerning or worsening symptoms may require medical assessment first.
Do I only use the Reformer at Pilatique?
No. Depending on your programme, sessions may use Reformer, Cadillac, Stability Chair, Barrels and Matwork. Pilatique treats the Reformer as part of the Pilates method rather than the entire method.
Where can I do Reformer Pilates with Pilatique in Singapore?
Pilatique operates at Gemmill Lane near Telok Ayer and Chinatown MRT, Centrium Square near Farrer Park MRT, and Bukit Timah Plaza near Beauty World MRT. Private and Duet sessions may use the Reformer together with other Pilates apparatus.
